Sounds like some kind of vacuum leak? No CEL, but occasionally will shudder while idling. No other symptoms.

definitely sounds like a vacuum leak. Start tugging on hoses and see what is loose

If it is a vacuum leak, how driveable is the car?

Don't drive it without fixing it. If you really need to drive it very conservatively. It can create a very lean condition which is not good. If it's a turbo I wouldn't drive it at all.

Thanks a lot for the information. Why would the CEL not light up?

Vacuum leaks won't always cause cells. I had the tube from my intercooler to my throttle body pop off once. Sounded like a wave crashing everything the turbo spooled up. Never got a cell.
